Focus
The Global NTFP Partnership is an initiative to support the pro-poor development of this sector by building up strong self-sustaining institutional roots that the NTFP sector currently lacks. The Global NTFP Partnership’s aims to achieve sustainable enhancement of the livelihoods of NTFP collectors and producers through support to pro-poor development of the NTFP sector within a sustainable economic framework. With currently 19 members, the Partnership is in a position to mobilize formidable knowledge and technical resources.
The Partnership aims to achieve the following goals: - Strengthened profiles of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and stakeholders, - Enhanced capacities of partners and producers, - Improved NTFP frameworks: markets, policies, and livelihood opportunities, and - Improved NTFP management systems.
This special issue of the Newsletter focuses on the partners’ profiles.

Latest News
Strategy Development
Several Partners are working on the collaborative development of the Strategic Plan for the Partnership. This process will be finalized soon. As an input into the strategy development process, a SWOT analysis has been carried out. The results of the analysis have been posted on the NTFP website.
Website and Knowledge Repository
A website (see Main_Page) has been set up. This is a Wiki-based application which can be used for the collaborative content development. All partners are invited to provide contributions to build up the knowledge repository. The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) has provided valuable assistance to this project, which we gratefully acknowledge herewith.
Charcoal and Communities in Africa
2006 being the Year of Charcoal, INBAR is currently mobilizing funds for activities and a conference on charcoal and communities in Mozambique. The objectives of the international conference are: To understand the severity of dependence on wood for energy needs in Africa and globally To better understand charcoal flows To propose possible policy interventions To explore the potential and facilitate technology transfer To establish a network and create a community of practice To develop project concept notes To raise awareness and create interest among the donor community
The conference is planned to take place in early 2007 in Maputo. Several Partners are expected to play an active role in this undertaking, including CIBART, InHand Abra and ICRAF. The Government of Mozambique has offered to host the conference. INBAR is actively seeking support for the conference and related activities. The German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) has expressed an interest in participating and in supporting this. Approval as GFAR Global Partnership Programme (GPP) The Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR) has developed streamlined criteria and guidelines for initiatives to be approved as GPPs. The Partnership is a pipeline GPP. A concept note will be prepared for the GFAR Programme Committee Meeting and Steering Committee Meeting later in 2006.
New Partners
As most of the readers would already know, the Partnership is pleased to announce that several new partners have joined or have begun to work closer with the Partnership. These include: ANSAB (joined), ACUC (joined), Fundación Chile (joined), Multipurpose Tree Species Research Network of Sri Lanka (joined), and FAO (collaboration).
Call for More Partner Information
We plan to carry out a more detailed survey of the partnership (key expertise, CVs of key staff) in the near future to draw out information which will enable us to clearly identify and pursue areas for cooperation. An invitation to participate will be sent around soon.

BOTA Student Assistance Program (BOTA-SAP) Bamboo of the Americas (BOTA) recently initiated a program to assist students in field work related to native bamboo species in the Americas.
