Bhishma Subedi

Key Qualifications: Bhishma Subedi, Executive Director of ANSAB (Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bioresources), has over 15 years of experience in program design, planning, management, monitoring and evaluation as well as research, university teaching, policy analysis, and networking in the area of participatory natural resources management, esp. community forestry, NTFPs, high value crops, enterprises, biodiversity and social ecology. He has worked with over 500 organizations and individuals in Nepal active in community forestry and NTFPs issues through his founding/coordinating role in the Nepal NTFP Network, Himali Jadibuti Sarokar Samuha, Nepali NTFPs Promotion Alliance, among others. He has designed or contributed to formulate and led the implementation of over 20 development and research projects including those with multiple donors and partners in Asia. Positive changes in policy as well as the life of the poor and conservation are evident through his strong coordination and leadership skills and a keen devotion to rich and productive biodiversity and prosperous communities in Himalaya. He has conducted research and studies in community forestry, livelihoods, enterprise-based biodiversity conservation, access, land tenure and property rights, NTFP enterprises, marketing, subsector and value-chain analysis; developed strategies for community-based enterprise oriented biodiversity conservation in ecologically sensitive areas in the Himalaya of Nepal; and developed methods for developing and profiling community based NTFP enterprise options. As a faculty member at the Institute of Forestry of Tribhuvan University in Nepal, he has designed and taught several theoretical and practical courses on community forestry, human resource management, rural sociology, extension, and research methods to forestry students at B. Sc. and Technical Certificate levels and NTFP enterprises development at M.S. level. Dr. Subedi has also supervised/supported Masters and PhD students from European, U.S. and South Asian Universities. Subedi has received a PhD in Forestry from Kumaun University, India, an M.S. in Forest and Environmental Sciences from Yale University, USA and a B. S. in Agriculture from Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
